I was people watching as I sat in the parking lot waiting for my husband to run in to pay for our gas. I saw a group of men get out of their lawn service pickup and start making their way to the doors. One man in the group ran ahead of everyone else specifically to open the door for a woman coming from the other direction.
In that moment, I could see the change in her. She lifted her head; she brightened before my eyes. A big, beautiful smile came across her face as she thanked the man and then walked through the door.
This small gesture, this simple act of kindness, obviously changed something in that moment for that woman.
I loved being witness to that moment, to that simple act of kindness lighting up a stranger’s face. I loved being witness to a moment of kindness actually being lived out. For some reason, seeing that really stuck with me through the last several weeks.
What stuck with me the most was her reaction. Of course, it’s always nice to witness kindness in the world around us. I love seeing someone going out of their way to be kind to a stranger when they think nobody is watching. But how his kindness lit up her face was indescribable. It went beyond just a random act of kindness. It was a truly beautiful way of passing along God’s love.
In our day-to-day lives, people are so often in a rush, wrapped up in their own stuff and not even paying attention to anything or anyone around them. You and I both know the countless people we see walking around looking only at their phones — so many opportunities are missed!
We don’t fully understand how a small gesture can really affect someone. We don’t realize how important an everyday encounter can really be. We forget how our behavior, how our actions, are the way we magnify His presence. It can be so simple yet so meaningful.
So, as those who have been chosen of God, holy and beloved, put on a heart of compassion,
kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.
Colossians 3:12 (NASB)
We are chosen. We have a responsibility to be a light in this world. We are meant to shine His light before others. It is not just a responsibility but also a privilege to know His love and to magnify Him in this way.
Through simple acts, through small gestures, we can make Him visible to the world around us! No way is too small to spread God’s love to everyone. It doesn’t have to be grand. It doesn’t have to be loud. It is all a matter of the heart.
In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.
Matthew 5:16 (NIV)
So, who is with me? Who is ready to go out into your daily encounters and magnify His light, His presence, and make a meaningful difference?
