If I had a dollar for every time I wondered if I heard God speak or what His will is, I’d be a millionaire! You’d probably be one too. I’ve really come to the conclusion that we complicate His voice and His desires more often than not. We take God’s Words and make them fit our thoughts and circumstances. We don’t do it intentionally.
But what I’ve discovered is that I need to take my thoughts and circumstances and conform them to His Word.
That is the first step.
Many of us want God to shout and hold up neon signs when we’re needing an answer or direction. Rarely does He do that. He tends to speak in a quiet whisper, a still small voice.
What does that mean for us?
Well, it means that we must get quiet enough to hear Him and then be obedient to what He is calling us to do. Neither of these two are easy, but we must if we are to walk out the fullness of God’s will in our lives.
For every one of God’s promises is “Yes” in Him. Therefore, the “Amen” is also spoken through Him by us for God’s glory. {2 Corinthians 1:20}
A few weeks ago, my friend Stacie was leading the small group I attend, and she recited this verse. In her explanation, she said something that hit me in a new way. She said that we always have a green light in God. What?! Always?! That, of course, makes no sense to me in my natural mind. Now, this green light, however, is contingent on what is aligned with His Word.
Think about it. How many times do we go through our day and a thought to bless someone or serve someone or even pray for someone comes to mind? We immediately doubt that thought or dismiss it. We think that somehow it’s not from God. We think it may just be a random idea. Why do we do that?!
The enemy will never ask us to bless or do good for someone else. That is not what He does. That is not His style.
But, it is totally the Lord’s style!
So, how do we find out God’s will for our lives? We look to His Word.
God intentionally gave all of His children the same blueprint for how to be in the center of His will. It looks something like this . . .
Jesus replied: ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ {Matthew 22:37-39}
Learn to do right; seek justice. Defend the oppressed. Take up the cause of the fatherless; plead the case of the widow. {Isaiah 1:17}
Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out demons. Freely you have received, freely give. {Matthew 10:8}
Those three verses speak volumes. Out of the millions of believers in the world, God will accomplish so much in us and through us that is unique to us. But this is always His heart . . . to have intimacy with us, to love us unconditionally, to be a Father and to bring healing, restoration and freedom to the lost, broken, and hurting.
If that is His heart, as those made in His very image, that should be ours as well.
Let’s embrace the green light that we have in God. If we feel His Spirit saying move, let’s obey without haste and watch the goodness of God flow.
If we fully yield to the leading of the Holy Spirit, He will be the biggest adventure that we could ever dream of.
Describe a time when you obeyed or disobeyed God’s leading when He asked you to bless, serve, or encourage someone. What did you learn from that experience?
