My friend Caroline shared one of her dreams with us a few years ago–she wanted to celebrate her 40th birthday with her friends at the beach. It seemed like a crazy dream, more of a Big Hairy Audacious Goal, I mean, I didn’t tell her that to her face but this girl has a massive amount of friends. Also, she doesn’t own a beach house, she’s not rich and she lives in Chicago– nowhere near a beach at least not a real one. Her husband has a job–who would stay with their four children?
Guess what’s happening right now, this very week?
This is Caroline’s dream come true. She planned, she saved, her husband sacrificed and encouraged and took a week off work and look what is happening. Women from all over the country are joining Caroline to celebrate her friendship this week at a huge beach house. And because Caroline is internet savvy there’s even a hashtag #ctbeachbirthday.
I’ll be on my way in a few days and I’m incredibly thankful that I felt the nudge to risk feeling like a dork, being misunderstood, and taking the time to make friends in real life. I hope you have decided that it’s worth the risk too. It’s mainstream to have big dreams when it comes to paying off debt and starting a business and traveling the world. I love that one of Caroline’s dreams involved her friends. Have you ever had a big dream for the sake of friendships?
PS, 10 more days till (in)RL get a jump start with real friendships (in) your community.

Happy Birthday to Caroline!!
Prayers for safe travels and a marvelous time for everyone!
Thanks for inspiring and (in)couraging us!
Ps- I’d always thought of a tea party to indulge in for bffs on my birthday…but never had the courage to think it could be pulled off… Hmmm, maybe in a few years when I turn 55??

So, funny story. I just pulled up my blog reader and this post popped up and then I said ” wait! Isn’t that the house I’m sitting in right now? No, wait. IT IS!!”
Caroline continues to blow my mind with her generosity and love. Such an amazing lady!!
Can’t wait for you to be here.
How much fun is that!? What a great idea/dream.
So Lake Michigan doesn’t have real beaches??? Whatever! Leave the big city and visit the West Michigan side of the lake. Expand your horizons, get out of the armpit of Chicago and visit some new places. Our beaches (and our communities) win.
well it’s about time someone took up for Lake Michigan! took y’all long enough!!!
“I’m incredibly thankful that I felt the nudge to risk feeling like a dork, being misunderstood, and taking the time to make friends in real life.” I hate being misunderstood. Ah, Nester…thanks for the encouragement. A reminder I need to be okay with being misunderstood for the sake of real life friendship.
The risk of being misunderstood….oh my, that’s a biggie for me.
I feel like it happens often and I have to fight not shutting myself off from friendships (new & old) just to avoid being misunderstood.
